Furikake-Tofu

In my ongoing experiment to make tofu fun and flavorful I stumbled upon this Japanese seasoning called Furikake. It’s a blend of sesame seeds, seaweed and salt and can be found at almost any local Asian market or Japanese store. It’s also for sale on the internet. It is DELISH on baked tofu!

Perhaps native Japanese people are very familiar with this but it never appeared in my Americanized household. Some versions have MSG in them so check the label if you’re trying to avoid the substance.

So far I’ve made this a few times and it’s great by itself or added to a spinach salad.

Ingredients:

1 package medium-firm/firm tofu

Furikake Seasoning (pictured to the right)

Recipe:

1. Drain the tofu and cut long-wise through the center. Press the water out as much as desired with paper towels and laying something heavy on top.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

3. Once you’ve dried the tofu, lay it tough side down with parchment paper (better for the environment than foil) on a baking sheet.

4. Season the soft side of the tofu with Furikake with as much or as little as you’d like.

5. Let bake undisturbed for 1 hour.
